Racked vs. Stepped Fences: How to Fence a Sloped Yard

Most North Georgia yards are not flat. Here is how racked and stepped fences handle a slope, and how we choose between them.

Should a fence on a slope be racked or stepped? On most sloped yards we rack the fence, so the panels follow the grade and stay close to the ground along the whole run. We step the fence where the ground drops in distinct levels, such as at a retaining wall, or when the design calls for a top line that stays truly level. We look at the slope at your walkthrough and recommend the approach that fits your property and your HOA.

What a racked fence is

A racked fence follows the slope of the ground. Each panel tilts to match the grade, so the top of the fence rises and falls with the yard and the gap at the bottom stays small and even.

Racking works best on gradual slopes. How much a panel can rack depends on the product, and some aluminum and vinyl panels can only tilt so far before they need a different approach.

What a stepped fence is

A stepped fence keeps each panel level and moves down the slope in steps. The top line looks like a staircase, and each panel leaves a wedge-shaped gap under its low end.

Steps make sense where the ground drops in distinct levels, such as at a retaining wall, or on a steep grade where panels cannot rack far enough. They are also the answer when a design needs a level top line.

How we decide

During your walkthrough we look at how steep the slope is, whether it changes gradually or in drops, where gates will go, what your HOA allows, and what material you want. Then we recommend the approach that fits. On most sloped properties that is a racked fence, and we step it where the grade calls for it.

Things to ask about a sloped yard

  • Will the bottom gap be even, or will there be wedge-shaped gaps under the panels?
  • If you have a dog or small children, how will the gaps be handled?
  • Does your HOA have a rule about fence height measured on a slope?
  • Where will gates sit, and will they swing freely on the grade?

Common questions

Which looks better, racked or stepped?

It depends on the yard and the material. Racked fences give a smooth, flowing line that follows the land, while stepped fences give a deliberate, level look. We show you what each would look like on your property before you decide.

Can aluminum fencing be racked?

Yes, in most cases. On most sloped properties we rack the panels so they follow the grade, and we step them where the ground drops in distinct levels or when the design calls for a level top line. We confirm the right approach at your walkthrough.

Do gaps under a stepped fence matter?

They can, especially with dogs or small children. We talk through how the gaps will look and how to handle them before the fence goes in.

Does a slope change the HOA approval?

It can. Some HOAs set rules for how fence height is measured on a slope. We handle the HOA approval paperwork, and approval is always the HOA's decision.
