Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about how fence installation actually works — HOAs, surveys, permits, materials, timelines, warranties, and cleanup.

Do you handle HOA approval? How does it work?

Yes, we handle the HOA approval paperwork, and approval itself is always up to your HOA. Most HOAs require written approval from their architectural review committee before you build. We prepare the layout, style, height, material, and color details the committee typically asks for, work with you to get the request submitted, and recommend waiting for written approval before installation is scheduled. We can't guarantee approval or its timeline. See our HOA fence approval guide.

How long does a fence installation take, from estimate to finished?

A typical residential installation takes 1 to 2 days on site, depending on the size of the project, but the full timeline from estimate to finished fence also depends on HOA approval, permits, material availability, weather, and scheduling. The steps are a free estimate visit and written estimate, HOA approval or permits if needed, material ordering and scheduling, then installation and cleanup. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your written estimate and keep you informed if anything changes.

What affects the cost of a fence?

The main cost factors are the length of the fence, the material, the height, the number and size of gates, the terrain, removal of an old fence, and any permit or HOA requirements. Longer runs and taller fences use more material and labor, cedar, vinyl, and aluminum price differently than pressure-treated pine, slopes, rock, roots, and tight access slow installation, and gates and old-fence removal add work. We explain each factor in your free written estimate so you can see where the money goes.

Do I need a permit in Forsyth County?

In unincorporated Forsyth County, a building permit is required for fences and walls over 6 feet tall. Front-yard fences are limited to 48 inches, and fences up to 8 feet are allowed in required side and rear setbacks. Inside a city such as Cumming, the city's rules apply instead, and other counties and cities in our area have their own. We'll tell you whether your project is likely to need a permit, and the permit itself is ultimately the property owner's responsibility. See our fence permit guide and our service area pages for local rules.

Are you insured? What warranty do you offer?

Yes, Forsyth Fence is fully insured, and every installation carries a 7-year workmanship warranty. The warranty covers our installation work. Manufacturer warranties on materials vary by product, and we'll explain what applies to your fence in your written estimate.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Forsyth, Cherokee, Dawson, Hall, Gwinnett, and North Fulton counties, plus Cobb County communities including Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, and East Cobb. Should I repair or replace my fence?

When a fence is nearing the end of its service life, replacement is typically the sounder investment, because money spent on a repair that will last only a few years is better applied to a new fence. If your fence is otherwise in good condition, a targeted repair may be the right choice, and we will give you an honest recommendation either way. When we replace a fence, we remove the old material and leave the property clean. See our fence planning guide.

How do you handle a sloped yard?

On most sloped properties we rack the fence, which lets the panels follow the grade and keeps the fence close to the ground. We step it where the grade drops in distinct levels, such as at a retaining wall, or when the design calls for a top line that remains truly level. We evaluate the slope during your walkthrough and recommend the approach that suits your property.

What should I expect on install day?

Installation begins with a walkthrough of the property, where you and our team review the fence details together. Most projects take one to two days, depending on size and weather, and when the work is complete we clean up the yard and conduct a final walkthrough with you.

Do I need a survey before you install my fence?

We recommend having a recent property survey on hand, especially if your property lines aren't clearly marked. If you don't have one, we'll do our best to work from visible markers, existing fence lines, and any plat information you can provide. We always encourage installing on or inside your confirmed property line to avoid a dispute with a neighbor down the road.

Who is responsible for marking property lines?

The homeowner is responsible for confirming property lines, typically through a survey or existing legal markers. We'll always walk the planned fence line with you before installation and flag anything that looks unclear, but we're not able to legally determine your boundary lines for you.

What materials do you install?

We install wood privacy, aluminum, vinyl, chain-link, pool, pet, decorative, and ranch rail/farm fencing, sourced through established supplier relationships. We'll walk you through the realistic pros, cons, and price differences of each so you can choose with confidence — not just push whatever's most expensive.

Will you clean up after installation?

Yes. Thorough cleanup is part of every job we do — we remove old fencing debris (if we're replacing an existing fence), leftover materials, and hardware packaging before we consider a project finished.
